چکیده

Recently, p-wave cold collisions were shown to dominate the density-dependent shift of the clock transition frequency in a 171Yb optical lattice clock. Here we demonstrate that by operating such a system at the proper excitation fraction, the cold-collision shift is canceled below the 5 × 10−18 fractional frequency level. We report inelastic two-body loss rates for P0 -P0 and S0 -P0 scattering. We also measure interaction shifts in an unpolarized atomic sample. Collision measurements for this spin-1/2 171Yb system are relevant for high-performance optical clocks as well as strongly interacting systems for quantum information and quantum simulation applications.

We experimentally investigate an optical clock based on Yb (I = 1/2) atoms confined in an optical lattice. We have evaluated all known frequency shifts to the clock transition, including a densitydependent collision shift, with a fractional uncertainty of 3.4 × 10, limited principally by uncertainty in the blackbody radiation Stark shift. We measured the absolute clock transition frequency rela...

Improved Frequency Measurement of a One-Dimensional Optical Lattice Clock with a Spin-Polarized Fermionic Sr Isotope

We demonstrate a one-dimensional optical lattice clock with a spin-polarized fermionic isotope designed to realize a collision-shift-free atomic clock with neutral atom ensembles. To reduce systematic uncertainties, we developed both Zeeman shift and vector light-shift cancellation techniques. By introducing both an H-maser and a Global Positioning System (GPS) carrier phase link, the absolute ...

Collisional losses, decoherence, and frequency shifts in optical lattice clocks with bosons.

We have quantified collisional losses, decoherence and the collision shift in a one-dimensional optical lattice clock on the highly forbidden transition (1)S(0)-(3)P(0) at 698 nm with bosonic (88)Sr. We were able to distinguish two loss channels: inelastic collisions between atoms in the upper and lower clock state and atoms in the upper clock state only. Based on the measured coefficients, we ...

Measurement and cancellation of the cold collision frequency shift in an 87Rb fountain clock

We measure a cold collision frequency shift in an 87Rb fountain clock that is fractionally 30 times smaller than that for Cs. The shift is -0.38(8) mHz for a density of 1.0(6)x10(9) cm(-3). We study the cavity pulling of the atomic transition and use it to cancel the cold collision shift. We also measure the partial frequency shifts of each clock state finding 2(lambda(10)-lambda(20))/(lambda(1...

Inelastic collisions in optically trapped ultracold metastable ytterbium.

We report measurement of inelastic loss in dense and cold metastable ytterbium (Yb[3P2]). Use of an optical far-off-resonance trap enables us to trap atoms in all magnetic sublevels, removing m-changing collisional trap loss from the system. Trapped samples of Yb[3P2] are produced at a density of 2 x 10(13) cm(-3) and temperature of 2 microK. We observe rapid two-body trap loss of Yb[3P2] and m...
